Frequently Asked Questions.

How do I prepare for a spray tan session?

For best results you should shower and exfoliate to remove the build up of dead skin cells. There are a number of dedicated products available which are specially designed to allow as much of the tanning solution through as possible.

After showering don't put on any perfumes, lotions, deodorants or make up. These will stop some of the solution attaching to your skin, and in some cases some deodorants have been known to turn armpits green!

Shave or wax at least 24 hours before the session, and if waxing make sure you remove any wax residue

What should I wear?

Attire for women is whatever you are comfortable with. Many things can be done to minimise tan lines. The key is your comfort level.

Attire for men is boxers, swim trunks or shorts.

Alternatively we provide disposable underwear. Your tanning specialist will use the utmost discretion. Loose fitting clothing should be worn after a spray tan. DHA can react with wool, nylon, and silk. These fabrics should not be worn during or immediately following your tanning session.

How long will my spray tan last?

Usually 7-10 days, although the time for any tan is very much down to how well you prepare and how you maintain it, and it can vary from person to person and depends on your activities and skin type as well as the type of spray used.

Because the spray tan only affects the top layer of skin, the tan cannot always outlast the natural exfoliation process.

What should I do after the Spray Tan session?

Although we dry you its best to should wear lose clothes and preferably flip flops for the first hour as some of the bronzer can rub off on your clothing and shoes can cause your feet to perspire. You should wait 6-8 hours before showering.

Avoid wool, nylon and silk for 6-8 hours after your session, as these fabrics can be stained by the Tan Solution.

Should I shave before or after the Spray Tan application?

Shaving is a form of exfoliation so you should shave about 24 hours before the application. Shaving after will take off some of your tan.

After your application, be sure to use a new razor as old dull blades can mar your results.

Will swimming affect my Spray Tan?

Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the results, and will diminish the length of your tan.

How does it work?

The active ingredient is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids on the outer most layer of the skin. This reaction causes the colour of the skin to change, producing a beautiful natural tan.

DHA starts to react with the skin within 2 hours of the tan application and continues to do so for a total of approximately 8 hours.

Is a Spray Tan safe?

DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to colour the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient.

DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity. What happens if I inhale any of the tan mist? While you shouldn’t purposely inhale or ingest the tan mist, it is known that DHA is a non-hazardous compound and causes no adverse reaction in moderate quantities when applied topically or even ingested. DHA has been used as a diet supplement in sports nutrition and is non-carcinogenic. Testing has further shown that DHA is less toxic than aspirin, caffeine and even common table salt. We can also offer you a mask to cover your mouth while we are spraying your body.

Can a Spray Tan be removed?

The colour produced by a tan does not wash off; it simply fades as the upper layers of the epidermis wear away. You can try to speed the exfoliation process by gently scrubbing the skin with a washcloth or loofah sponge. Do not overscrub! Another way of removing spray tan is to moisturise your body with baby oil, leave it on for couple of hours, and then have a hot bath, pour some exfoliating gel onto it loofah or gloves and scrub everything off.

Can I still get a spray if I have very pale, sensitive or dry skin?

Of course! We cater for all skin types, and use different tan solutions for different skin types.

Does a Spray Tan provide SPF protection?

No, Spray Tans do not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly.

Your skin will appear tanned, even though it's not.

There is virtually no Sun Protection Factor (SPF) so your skin is still exposed and vulnerable to the sun. If you expose your skin to UV rays from the sun or a tanning bed, it is important to use a lotion with SPF to protect you from the harmful rays.

What is the advantage of a Spray Tan over UV tanning?

Airbrush tanning is an alternative form of tanning.  People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time tanning, be it natural or in tanning beds will find this form of tanning very comforting.

One application with airbrush tanning will be equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, therefor making it cost effective.

Airbrush tanning also spares the skin of excessive wear and tear and free from potential burns caused by the sun or tanning beds.

Of course, the most important factor, Cancer Research UK are advising that sun bed use or sun tanning can increase your risk of skin cancer

How is a Spray Tan applied?

Within 5-10 minutes after application you can get dressed.
